The recent closure of the country’s primary airport following gang violence that targeted a commercial flight is just the latest chapter in Haiti’s ongoing struggle for stability.
The closure of Haiti’s international airport on Monday due to gunfire from gangs that targeted a commercial flight is a stark reminder of the challenges facing the Caribbean nation. The incident, which saw a Spirit Airlines flight from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Port-Au-Prince being fired upon just moments before landing, resulted in the flight attendant sustaining minor injuries and the aircraft being diverted to the Dominican Republic.
The interior of the aircraft bore witness to the violence, with photographs and videos showing the aftermath of the attack. The U.S. Embassy labeled the incident as part of “gang-led efforts to block travel to and from Port-au-Prince,” highlighting the ongoing threat posed by armed groups in Haiti.
As a result of the closure of the airport and the escalating violence in the streets of Port-au-Prince, several airlines, including American Airlines, JetBlue, and Spirit Airlines, announced the cancellation of flights to and from Haiti. The situation on the ground was dire, with firefights between gangs and police breaking out in various parts of the capital and civilians fleeing in terror.
The unrest in Haiti comes on the heels of political turmoil that saw the dismissal of interim Prime Minister Garry Conille by a council tasked with restoring democratic order in the country. The United Nations estimates that gangs control 85% of Port-au-Prince, making it one of the most dangerous cities in the world. Efforts to address the violence, including a U.N.-backed mission led by Kenyan police, have been hampered by funding and personnel shortages, further exacerbating the situation on the ground.
Louis-Henri Mars, of the peace-building organization Lakou Lapè, warns that the consequences of political conflict and gang violence in Haiti will be felt by the most vulnerable members of society. With half of the population teetering on the brink of starvation, the impact of ongoing violence and instability could be catastrophic.
The formation of a transitional council earlier this year was intended to pave the way for Haiti’s next prime minister and Cabinet, amid a backdrop of chaos following the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021. However, the council’s mandate has been marred by political maneuvering and internal strife, leading to the dismissal of Prime Minister Conille and further complicating the path to stability.
International organizations, such as the Organization of American States and the United Nations, have attempted to mediate and facilitate the transition to democratic elections, but their efforts have met with limited success.
